Importance of Hi-Tech farming

Hi-Tech farming

Importance

All of you know that India is most populated country in the world. Among various state, the intensity of population in Kerala is about 3.6 times that of national average. Now itself, we cannot feed all the mouth of our population in India. Due to drastic change in climatic condition, vast decrease in ground water table, soil degradation and lack of knowledge about advance technologies and development in the field of agriculture among the farmers of India, the productivity of Agricultural land is very less compared to other countries. Recently, on worldwide, more importance is giving for sustainable farming rather than organic farming due to drastic decrease in the availability of natural resources for successful farming. Hydroponics, aquaponics, polyhouse farming, open precision farming, vertical farming and automated integrated farming are modern hitech farming techniques we can adopt for increase in production and to eliminate the soil/water/atmospheric pollution

Advantages

If it is a climate controlled protected structure, we can grow any plant in any place during any season. We can grow any plant in any place during any season

The productivity of the crop can be increased considerably (3 to 10 times).

Superior quality produce can be obtained.

Efficient use of various inputs like water, fertilizers, seeds and plant protection chemicals can be ensured (50 to 60% can be saved).

Less pests and disease attack. Biocontrol is possible

We can grow any plant in any place during any season.

Organic products can be effectively produced. Increased value of products in global market p

Hi-Tech agriculture helps to minimize the stress (water/ nutrient/climate stress) to the plants

Agricultural crop production schedules can be planned to take advantage of market needs. Farmers can substantially increase income if they can start transplants in a greenhouse earlier than in outdoors to bring produce to market early, when prices are higher.

Adoption of micro irrigation and fertigation facilitates effective utilization of water and nutrients and helps to avoid the contamination of ground water.

As favorable conditions can be created for the plants, cultivation in problematic agro climates is possible.

High quality seed production or nursery production activities could be undertaken.

By manipulating temperature, humidity and light duration inside the greenhouse, the proposed variety of crops are made to flower under greenhouse conditions. The synchronization of flowering helps in crossing the different parental varieties. This has accelerated the programme of developing new crop varieties

practicable to utilize greenhouse facility for vertical space by adopting tier system. Thus capacity utilization becomes more than 100%.

Percentage of germination of seeds and grafted plants is high.

Equal distribution of sunlight at all areas

Reduced flower and fruit drop due to proper moisture maintenance and soil aeration

Increased aeration helps increased root growth

Tissue culture plants if kept for 30-45 days in GHs before planting in open field, 98 to 100% of plants can be succeeded

Soil less cultures like peat moss, coir pith, perlite, rice hulls and compost can be practiced for growing the crops. hydroponics, aeroponics is also possible

Greenhouses are suitable for automation of irrigation, application of other inputs and environmental controls by using computers and artificial intelligence techniques.

Self-employment for educated youth on farm can be increased

Automatic vertical integrated farming units

The availability of limited resources, scarce and inadequate manpower, a growing population, increasing pollution, climate change, and associated challenges must be addressed to achieve food security for the public and a sustainable income for the farming community. In a state like Kerala and similar urban-adjacent regions, where per capita land availability is drastically decreasing, there is a need for technology that ensures the production of high-quality agricultural products in a sustainable manner within limited space. During my tenure at the Hi-tech Research and Training Unit, Kerala Agricultural University, Vellanikkara, I conducted extensive research and training programs on various hi-tech farming techniques, including polyhouse farming, hydroponics, aquaponics, open precision farming, vertical farming, and the poly-kitchen garden—a system I designed and developed to enable vegetable cultivation for families with small landholdings or individuals living in apartments. Ho...

Cultivation of English cucumber inside the polyhouse

Introduction English  Cucumber cultivation under naturally ventilated greenhouse conditions was found economically viable and the profits can further be improved through year-round cultivation in soilless media under a greenhouse aided with optimal microclimatic conditions. Cucumbers have very fast growth rate. Cucumbers are extremely sensitive to environmental parameters like light, air temperature & humidity and nutritional needs. For a cucumber crop to succeed, growers must strictly follow the crop's environmental and nutritional needs. Climate For good production, a temperature range of 25°C to 30°C during the day time and 18 °C to 22°C during night time is desirable. Peak day time temperatures of 30°C to 35°C are tolerable. In favourable environmental condition, the cucumber plants grow rapidly and produce lot of cucumber fruits. But prolonged periods of high temperatures may adversely affect the fruit quality. Night temperatures not lower than 18°C ...

Production of Salad Vegetables in NFT Hydroponics: A Sustainable and Profitable Venture

Introduction The growing consumer demand for pesticide-free, high-nutrition, and fresh produce has significantly increased interest in hydroponic farming. Among the various methods of hydroponics, the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) stands out for its efficiency in cultivating leafy vegetables and herbs. This system is particularly suited for producing salad vegetables such as lettuce, kale, basil, arugula, spinach, and parsley , especially in urban and peri-urban regions where land is limited. NFT hydroponics involves a shallow stream of nutrient-rich water flowing through channels (most often HDPE pipes), where the plant roots absorb nutrients directly. This soilless, water-efficient system minimizes pest attacks and allows year-round production, making it an ideal technology for sustainable agriculture. Salad Vegetables Suitable for NFT Hydroponics Lettuce (Lactuca sativa): A core salad vegetable available in varieties such as Butterhead, Romaine, and...
